A walking tour of Elista

I've been waiting for the weather to get better to do a walking tour of downtown Elista. After a couple of days of rain, and strong winds yesterday (the Russian media reported the problems that this caused in Georgia, though I didn't see anything about similar problems just north of the Caucasus chain) I ventured out this afternoon. There have been a couple of requests for more pictures, so I've created a Google Map that traces my route, and have marked the pictures I took along the way. It's available here. I suggest turning on the satellite imagery at the top of the map for a little better idea of the urban geography.

Looks like a looong walk. Thanks for the photos. :)

Nice photos. Does your camera have built-in GPS? I'm guessing not, since I don't think the Russians would allow you to use that technology. So does that mean you georeferenced each photo by hand? Perhaps you could tell us (or just me), a bit more about how you created that snazzy Google Map...

What a neat thing to do w/google maps.

Yep, I georeferenced each of the photos by hand. Over a small space like this, it wasn't too tough to locate where I was standing when I took the photos. That said, it's not the exact location that one would get if the camera had a built-in GPS. I would be interested to see how one of those worked, and to know if the georeference is off by a small, directionally consistent amount with each photo, something that would have to be adjusted for.
