After a bit of a delay due to visa issues, it looks like I'll be leaving for Russia in about a week. Back-to-back red-eyes later, I'll be in Abakan, Khakassia, and then will travel on to Kyzyl via bus (matrushka). Next post from an internet cafe in Siberia!
In the meantime, here's a map of Tuva's location (and the other two regions where I'll be doing my work) for armchair geographers:
Also of note, Russia's Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, was recently in Tuva; he occupied himself with a little horseback riding, a little swimming, and some fishing. This was all after his trip to the bottom of Lake Baikal.

Ted! Looks awesome. I can't wait to hear anecdotes from the field. Ashby
Hey Ted,
I'm pretty jealous. These are some of my favorite places in Russia. When you are in Abakan, you absolutely must go to the Ayan Brewery, or at the very least, get lots and lots of their beer. It's the only beer worth drinking in Russia, and I will be forever indebted to you if you bring some back, whenever that may be. Also, you should check out the nearby "Lenin Sturbridge Village," as I call it - Shushenskoye, where he was exiled. Have a great time, and make sure the marshrutka driver stops at all the "sacred spots" and that you drink with him (they're about every 5 miles). Good luck.

Hi Ted! I'm the Whittier secretary; Mackenzie is a great addition to our staff! Your adventure sounds exciting. Since I've been to Tibet and saw the DVD called "Genghis Blues" (about a jazz musician who learns tuva throat singing and goes to Tuva), I've been wanting to go to Mongolia. I love high altitudes! Stay warm. What are in doing there exactly in terms of geography? Best, Wendy STokes
